Cedarmount Staff Profiles

Norma and Craig bought what was a thriving mixed general practice from Terence Morrow in 1997. They recognised from the outset, that it was increasingly difficult to keep abreast of the rapid advances in veterinary medicine in all species.Effective People Skills
Accordingly, a decision was taken to stop the farm and equine work, and concentrate on providing a high quality first opinion companion animal practice. This has been very successful, and our growing reputation for excellence has facilitated the development of a referral or second opinion practice within the existing clinic.

I am fortunate to have realised my ambition to become a Vet in 1978 when I qualified from Glasgow University. I spent four years in two Small Animal practices in Glasgow and gained my first blast of experience on a very sharp learning curve.

Norma and PoppyI then moved to become a Research Fellow at the University of Minnesota Veterinary School in USA from 1982 to 1984 where I gained a Masters Degree in Small Animal Medicine via a Thesis and course work. I returned to work at the University of Liverpool in the Veterinary Pathology Dept and this led to a teaching post in the department.

I enjoyed lecturing in reproductive pathology and performing diagnostic pathology on tissue samples submitted to the department from veterinary practitioners and the veterinary school. I learned a great deal during my time at Liverpool and the experience sparked an interest in cytology, which has enhanced our Cedarmount laboratory and clinical pathology skills. I continued to lecture until 1988. I have worked in small animal practice in Manchester and in Bangor since then. Craig and I have been partners for 14 years now.

Recently my special interests have been in reproduction and behaviour in dogs and cats. I feel very content to be part of a caring profession and even after many years enjoy working with pets and their owners. Life as a Veterinary surgeon is always exciting and we are still learning
new surgical techniques, solving different medical problems and fielding the hectic routine clinics after all these years. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all our clients, many of whom are friends for their loyalty and support over the years and hope that we can be of service for many years to come.

I am delighted to be working as a vet in my home town. It a great privilege to be involved in healing sick pets, and to get to know their owners, many of whom have become my friends over the years.
I qualified with distinction in Medicine from the Dick Vet College , Edinburgh in 1987.
Craig with Enya and FaraIn 2002, I was the first vet in NI to successfully complete the RCVS Certificate of Small Animal Medicine. This further qualification has facilitated a very high standard of diagnosis and therapy at Cedarmount, and in addition to our own patients, I now see referral cases in all aspects of internal medicine. From cancer care to renal disease, from cardiac cases to hypertension control, we aim to offer a first rate service.

I am a firm believer in ongoing professional training, promoting clinical excellence, and improving the welfare of those entrusted to our care. I have recently stepped down as Chair of the NI branch of BSAVA, after four years provision of high quality education courses for small animal vets in the Province. I have now moved onto the BSAVA Scientific Committee, where I am the practitioner voice on this high powered think tank, whose remit is to assess all pet-orientated scientific and medical advances, and make recommendations to all in general practice.Craig and family in the Mournes

I was extremely honoured, and deeply touched to be awarded the Vet of the Year in 2006 and want to thank the very many people involved in my nomination, and the huge number who sent cards, presents and expressions of support following the event. Thank you.Craig Reilly
